Mercy Health to close addiction center, lay off 45 employees: 3 things to know

Mercy Hospital, a Roman Catholic nonprofit community hospital in Portland, Maine, plans to close its substance abuse recovery center in Westbrook, Maine and move some of its services to Mercy's State Street location in Portland, according to a Bangor Daily News report.

The recovery center's closing, which is partly attributed to low reimbursement rates for addiction services, will affect about 250 patients and 90 employees at the Westbrook clinic.

Here are three things to know about Mercy's plans.

1. Mercy plans to lay off 45 employees and move another 45 employees who staff the inpatient and day programs of the Westbrook addiction center to the State Street campus July 1, Scott Rusk, vice president and CMO for Mercy, said in the report.

2. The recovery center is expected to close by the end of August, with some outpatient services ending by the end of June, according to The Portland Press Herald.

3. One-third of patients at the Westbrook center will be moved to the State Street location and continue to receive care with Mercy. Mr. Rusk told the Bangor Daily News the remaining two-thirds have no physician or physicians outside of Mercy and will receive assistance in finding care and filling prescriptions.
