Memorial Hermann adds new board position to improve transitions

Houston-based Memorial Hermann Health System's board elected longtime member Deborah Cannon to fill a new position designed to facilitate a seamless leadership transition: board chair-elect.

Ms. Cannon will succeed current chair Will Williams next January after a year of shadowing him.

"Given Deborah's deep understanding of the Memorial Hermann system, its workings and its leaders, she was the most logical and smart choice to succeed me," Mr. Williams said in a statement. "Her qualifications are impeccable. She's a strategic thinker who has served on and been a key contributor to several Memorial Hermann board committees."

He added, "Just as important, she appreciates Memorial Hermann's mission and commitment to our community to provide safe, high-quality care and will work diligently to make sure the system stays on course as one of the best healthcare systems in the country."

Ms. Cannon recently retired from her position as president and CEO of the Houston Zoo. She has served on Memorial Hermann's hospital and health system boards for a combined 11 years, including participation on several different committees. Prior to heading the zoo, Ms. Cannon was president of the Bank of America for the Houston Region, the first woman president of a subsidiary bank and the first woman to represent Bank of America abroad.
