Lehigh Valley Hospital-Hazleton implements layoffs

Lehigh Valley Hospital-Hazleton (Pa.) laid off an undisclosed number of employees, according to a Standard-Speaker report.

In a statement to the Standard-Speaker, hospital spokesperson Brian Downs partially attributed the layoffs to "industry conditions," including a move from inpatient to outpatient care. Physician recruitment and retention issues have also affected the hospital's patient volume, according to the report.

Mr. Downs did not provide an exact number of affected employees. He said the hospital is adjusting staff to meet patient volume and implementing a physician recruitment and retention plan, according to the report.

The hospital is considering other cost reductions "through efficiencies made possible through integration and consolidation with [Allentown, Pa.-based] Lehigh Valley Health Network," Mr. Downs said.
