Leader to leader tip: Turn challenges into opportunities — and stay caffeinated

The complex regulation of the healthcare industry and the fact that it touches all of our lives makes healthcare a uniquely challenging field. Therefore, healthcare leaders must be strong and positive drivers of change.

Jonathan M. Metsch is the former president and CEO LibertyHealth Jersey City (N.J.) Medical Center and a clinical professor at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York. He earned a doctorate of public health degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Metsch says,"Almost every challenge can be stated as a problem or an opportunity. It's always better to be positive than negative."

An important side note: Remember to bring your own brain fuel.

"Here's my most important 'Lesson Learned' that I tell my students in the first class: Don't depend on anyone else to bring the coffee. There's nothing worse than starting the day at a meeting where they don't provide coffee. It's better to have two cups than none."
