Lawsuit Against UPMC Moves to Federal Court

The demolition of University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Braddock (Pa.), which began last month, has been halted and challenged with a lawsuit that made its way to U.S. District Court this week, according to a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette report.

UPMC filed a notice Tuesday to move the lawsuit, filed by Braddock residents in October, out of county court because it involves civil rights elements that are best handled in federal court.

The suit claims UPMC violated plaintiffs' civil rights by closing a major healthcare provider in a less developed community while building a multi-million dollar facility in the affluent neighborhood of Monroeville, Pa. The suit also claims Braddock residents have encountered lower property values and adverse health effects since the hospital's closure in Jan. 2010.
