Las Vegas' University Medical Center Threatens to Cut Ties With Medical School Over Dean's Residency

Reno county commissioners may dissolve University Medical Center's ties with the University of Nevada medical school unless the new university dean takes residency in Las Vegas, according to a Las Vegas Sun report.

Clark County commissioners are frustrated over what they feel is a lack of commitment from UNR's Nevada School of Medicine to the medical center. Thomas L. Schwenk is set to begin his role as dean in July and plans to reside in both Reno and Las Vegas. UNR President Milt Glick, the school's interim dean, said a vice dean will be in Southern Nevada full-time.

Commissioners, however, have voiced concerns of unfulfilled promises and weak commitment, pushing for the dean in charge to live full-time in Reno. "It's always been an issue in Southern Nevada that the medical school has never paid attention to Southern Nevada," Commissioner Steve Sisolak said in the Las Vegas Sun report. "A vice dean is insulting."

Commissioners will meet with Mr. Schwenk next week.
