Highmark Lays Off 100 More Employees

Pittsburgh-based health insurer and hospital manager Highmark has laid off 100 health plan employees, bringing the company's total job losses to 520 within the past eight months, according to a Times Leader report.

Most recently, in February, Highmark laid off 132 IT and sales employees. Officials said this round of layoffs was necessary because the company's "workforce needs to be aligned to our strategies," according to the report.

Highmark, which operates Allegheny Health Network, the Pittsburgh-based multihospital, integrated delivery system that it acquired last April, is facing some financial pressure. Standard & Poor's Ratings Services downgraded the system's credit rating earlier this month, saying it's likely Highmark will post weaker future earnings than analysts previously expected.
