HHS Secretary Burwell to enroll in health plan on ACA exchange

HHS Secretary Sylvia Burwell plans to sign up for health insurance coverage under the ACA, via the District of Columbia's exchange, according to a Politico report.

Secretary Burwell, who has long touted the health law, will sign up for coverage on the District of Columbia's exchange when her federal employee plan ends, according to the article.

The announcement came Tuesday amid efforts by congressional Republicans to repeal the ACA.

"I'm going onto the D.C. marketplace," she told reporters, according to the report. The report notes that she also stressed the importance of Republicans putting forward a plan for replacing the ACA. "We really haven't seen a plan. An outline is not a plan. A framework is not a plan. This is such an important issue that affects millions of peoples' lives," she said.

Secretary Burwell also told reporters Tuesday she has not had extended discussions with Rep. Tom Price, MD, (R-Ga.), who President-elect Donald Trump has nominated as the next HHS secretary, as Mr. Trump's transition team has primarily interacted with career staff at HHS, according to Politico. During her remarks, she also cited a recent Congressional Budget Office report, which estimated repealing the ACA's individual mandate, marketplace subsidies and expanded Medicaid eligibility while sustaining other insurance market reforms under the law would decrease health insurance coverage and increase premiums.
