Health system leaders in Ohio fear job cuts under Senate bill

Formerly robust manufacturing regions that have come to depend on health systems as primary employers fear that passage of the Senate bill will take away many jobs, according to NPR.

In places like Jefferson County, Ohio, where 1 in 5 patients is a Medicaid enrollee, rollbacks on Medicaid coverage would not only affect Medicaid beneficiaries, but also the hospitals that service them. At Trinity Health System in Steubenville, Ohio, leaders estimate that new healthcare laws could cause them to lose $60 million over the next 10 years. As the county's biggest employer, that has many residents worried.

"It would be pretty devastating. If Trinity Hospital were to fail, this region economically would fail," said Joe Tasse, Trinity's acting CEO.

The Economic Policy Institute projects that, under the House's healthcare bill, more than 81,000 jobs in Ohio could be lost.
