Florida Hospital to Open Premier Workforce Housing Unit in 2013

Florida Hospital in Orlando is planning to open its first workforce housing unit in late 2013, which will consist of a 230-unit apartment complex located two blocks away from the downtown hospital, according to an Orlando Sentinel report.

Although the apartments are open to all applicants, hospital employees will be given priority. They will not receive any discounts, however, and will pay market-rate rent.

The hospital plans to use the housing as a tool to recruit employees, and has considered leasing some units on a short-term basis to new employees. A survey found Florida Hospital employees were three times more attracted to the on-campus apartments compared with other workers elsewhere in the country for similar projects, according to the report.

The project is expected to target annual household incomes of $40,000 to $70,000 for 80 percent of the units. The rest are slated to be designed for tenants with higher incomes, according to the report.
