Dr. Allen Sills is the NFL's new CMO

The National Football League named Allen Sills, MD, its new CMO. Dr. Sills is the founder of Nashville, Tenn.-based Vanderbilt Sports Concussion Center, and most recently served as its co-director. He was also a professor of neurological surgery and orthopedic surgery and rehabilitation at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Dr. Sills, who specializes in the treatment of athletes, previously provided care for players on NFL sidelines as an unaffiliated neurotrauma consultant. He has also served as a neurological consultant to the National Collegiate Athletic Association as well as the National Basketball Association's Memphis Grizzlies and the National Hockey League's Nashville Predators. He previously founded and served as executive director of the Memphis (Tenn.) Regional Brain Tumor Center.

Dr. Sills has published more than 150 scientific articles and presentations. He is a member of the Concussion in Sport Group and a fellow of the American Board of Neurological Surgery. He is currently the section editor for sports and rehabilitation for Neurosurgery.

Dr. Sills has completed a National Institutes of Health-funded neuro-oncology fellowship.

"We sought a highly credentialed physician and leader with experience as a clinician and researcher, and Dr. Sills' extensive experience caring for athletes makes him the right choice for this important position," said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell in a statement.
