Cape Fear Valley Health System in Fayetteville, N.C., and FirstHealth of the Carolinas in Pinehurst, N.C., are at odds again over expansion plans, according to a Fayetteville Observer report.
Both have applied for a certificate of need to add 28 beds to their facilities; a public hearing on the proposals is being held today. The state's 2012 medical facilities plan recommended 28 new beds for a three-county area where the health systems operate.
Cape Fear wants to add the beds to its main campus in Fayetteville, a project that is estimated to cost $4 million, while FirstHealth wants to add them to its planned 8-bed facility in Hoke County, N.C., for $18 million.
Cape Fear and FirstHealth just recently put an end to a two-year battle over expansion plans. Both systems had applied for CONs to expand in Hoke County, but each system opposed the other's plans. In April, the two organizations entered into an agreement that allowed them both to expand. Under the agreement, Cape Fear agreed to build a 41-bed hospital and outpatient pavilion east of U.S. 401 in Hoke County, while FirstHealth will build a eight-bed facility west of U.S. 401.
