Calhoun County Hospital in Arlington, Ga., is laying off 29 employees, according to an Albany Herald report.

The layoffs were attributed to Calhoun County's unstable financial condition, as CEO Earl Whitely said the amount the hospital spends on indigent care has rocketed over the past four years, according to the report.

The county's unemployment rate is 18 percent, more than double the national average.
