Becker's Speaker Series: 4 questions with former CHI COO Michael Rowan

Michael Rowan is the former president of health system delivery and COO of Englewood, Colo.-based Catholic Health Initiatives.

Prior to his time at CHI, Mr. Rowan was executive vice president and COO of Detroit-based St. John Health. He also held roles as president and CEO of Youngstown, Ohio-based Humility of Mary Health Partners and executive vice president and COO of Sarasota (Fla.) On Monday, April 17, Mr. Rowan will speak on a keynote panel at the Becker's Hospital Review 8th Annual Meeting. As part of an ongoing series, Becker's is talking to healthcare leaders who plan to speak at the conference, which will take place April 17 through April 20 in Chicago.

Question: The keynote panel you're speaking on in April is called "Key Strategies and Trends for 2017-2018." What are a few such strategies and trends?

Michael Rowan: I'm seeing consolidation and increased sophistication in medical staff alignment.

Q: What is one trait of the best boss you've ever had?

MR: The ability to stay one level above the work I was doing, from both a strategic and operational perspective.

Q: What are a few of the most lacking traits among leaders today?

MR: A couple of the most lacking traits are:

  • An inability to relate the strategies and operations of the health system to what is going on in terms of technology innovations, consumerism and lifestyle changes of the population served
  • An inability to bring together the majority of the continuum of care in a single organization, followed by an inability to tie together the entire continuum of care in a manner that improves the quality of care delivered

Q: What drew you to a career in healthcare?

MR: I was drawn to a career in healthcare because of a desire to have an impact on the well-being of the community I lived in. Most hospitals are major employers and economic forces in their communities.
