Becker's Healthcare Advisory Board welcomes COO of NewYork-Presbyterian, CEO of Hospital for Special Surgery

Becker's Healthcare is pleased to welcome two executives to its Advisory Board: Laura Forese, MD, executive vice president and COO of NewYork-Presbyterian, and Lou Shapiro, president and CEO of Hospital for Special Surgery. Both organizations are based in New York City.

Dr. Forese joined NewYork-Presbyterian as vice president of medical affairs in 2003. In her current role as system COO, she oversees NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, NewYork-Presbyterian Regional Hospital Network, NewYork-Presbyterian Physician Services and NewYork-Presbyterian Population and Community Health. She ensures the enterprise meets operating targets and operates under a shared patient-centered strategic vision and culture.

Before assuming her current role, Dr. Forese served as CMO; group senior vice president and COO of three NYP hospitals; and president of the former NYP Healthcare System. A pediatric orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Forese is an associate clinical professor of orthopedic surgery at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. She graduated from Princeton University and earned her medical degree and master's in public health from Columbia.

"Dr. Forese is an extraordinary leader with the background of a gifted orthopedic surgeon," says Scott Becker, publisher of Becker's Healthcare. "She is a special leader."

Mr. Shapiro joined the Hospital for Special Surgery — the nation's oldest orthopedic hospital — in October 2006. In his role as president and CEO of HSS, he is the lead administrator of what U.S. News & World Report ranked the No. 1 hospital in the nation for adult orthopedics for 2016-17. Patients travel from nearly every state and more than 100 countries to the hospital for this institution's diagnostic and clinical expertise.

Mr. Shapiro started his career at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, where he served in many capacities. Throughout his more than 30 years of experience in healthcare, he has served as a leader in the healthcare practice of McKinsey & Company and as executive vice president and COO of Geisinger Health System in Danville, Pa. Mr. Shapiro previously served as board chair of the Greater New York Hospital Association, for which he continues to serve on committees. He earned his bachelor's and master's in healthcare administration and management from the University of Pittsburgh.

"Lou Shapiro is one of the brightest people in healthcare," says Mr. Becker. "He was a brilliant consultant and is a great leader."
