Baxter lays off 12 employees: 5 things to know

Baxter, a hospital and renal product manufacturer based in Deerfield, Ill., has laid off 12 employees at its facility in Bloomington, Ind., reports The Herald-Times.

Here are five things to know.

1. The layoff affects 12 out of 650 employees in the Bloomington facility.

2. The 12 affected employees come from several different departments and functions, and represent a wide range of tenure and expertise, according to Deborah Spak, Baxter's director of global communications.

3. The layoff marks the second time in two years Baxter's Bloomington facility, part of the company's BioPharma Solutions business, let workers go following business assessments, according to the report. The facility also laid off 36 workers due to Baxter's decision to create a spin-off company called Baxalta, Ms. Spak told The Herald-Times.

4. Regarding the most recent layoff news, Ms. Spak said, "For the past several months, the leadership team at our Bloomington facility has been strategically managing attrition and related backfill of positions, as well as reducing the use of temporary workers, in order to minimize the impact of any necessary reductions in our workforce."

5. Baxter will provide severance and transition support services to the 12 employees affected by the most recent layoff.
