American Cancer Society pulls out of gala at Mar-a-Lago

Leo Vartorella -

The American Cancer Society announced Thursday it will no longer hold its 2018 fundraising gala at President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Fla., according to The Washington Post.

The ACS has held fundraising events at Mar-a-Lago since at least 2009, but will pull out of the venue for future galas. The change comes amid public outrage following Mr. Trump's response to the white supremacist protests in Charlottesville, Va.

"Our values and commitment to diversity are critical as we work to address the impact of cancer in every community," the ACS said in a statement. "It has become increasingly clear that the challenge to those values is outweighing other business considerations."

The Cleveland Clinic also announced that it will no longer be holding fundraising events at Mar-a-Lago.
