Adirondack Health in New York May Compress ED at Lake Placid Hospital

Officials at Saranac Lake, N.Y.-based Adirondack Health are considering converting the 24/7 emergency department at Adirondack Medical Center in Lake Placid, N.Y., to a 12-hour urgent care clinic, according to an Adirondack Daily Enterprise report.

Sequestration, other Medicare cuts and fewer inpatient admissions have led to $3 million in losses at the system, according to the report. In addition, the Lake Placid hospital ED lost $500,000 last year and recorded significantly less patients.

No final decision has been made on any proposals with AMC, and Adirondack Health officials plan to hold meetings with the community.

Last month, Adirondack Health laid off 18 full-time employees and reduced work hours for another 15. The system also laid off 17 employees in December.

Correction: An earlier version of this article inaccurately stated that Adirondack Health officials considering closing AMC in Lake Placid. The system has only proposed converting the emergency department into a 12-hour urgent care clinic, and a plan announced last June would move the hospital across the road to the nursing home campus also owned by Adirondack Health. In addition, Adirondack Medical Center-Lake Placid did not lose $3 million, the entire health system has. We regret these errors.
