Abiomed names Jeannine Rivet, Chris Van Gorder to board: 10 things to know

Danvers, Mass.-based Abiomed, a provider of heart support technologies, has appointed two new board members.

Here are 10 things to know about the new members.

Jeannine Rivet, BSN, RN, executive vice president of UnitedHealth Group, was appointed to Abiomed's board of directors.

1. Ms. Rivet previously held other roles at UnitedHealth Group, including:

  • CEO of UnitedHealthcare
  • CEO of Ingenix, a health IT and services company
  • CEO of Optum, UnitedHealth Group's health services platform

2. She is on the executive leadership team of UnitedHealth Group and on numerous industry leadership boards and councils, as well as a mentor to women in business.  

3. She was inducted as a fellow into the American Academy of Nursing.

4. Ms. Rivet earned a master's degree in public health from Boston University.  She also earned a bachelor's degree in nursing from Boston College and was a registered nurse for several years prior to entering the managed care business.

Chris Van Gorder, president and CEO of San Diego-based Scripps Health, was also appointed to Abiomed's board of directors.

5. Mr. Van Gorder has been president and CEO of Scripps since 2000.

6. In his role, he oversees all functions of Scripps, which has 15,000 employees and 2,600 affiliated physicians, including its five acute care hospital campuses, dozens of outpatient centers throughout San Diego County and a regional home health service and hospice.

7. In March 2006, California's governor appointed Mr. Van Gorder, a former police officer, to the California Commission on Emergency Medical Services where he served two terms.  

8. In January 2007,  then-U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice reappointed him to the United States National Commission for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization for a three-year term.

9. He is a clinical professor of health practice at the University of Southern California Price School of Public Policy, based in Los Angeles, where he also serves on the board of councilors.

10. Mr. Van Gorder earned a master's degree in public administration/health services administration at the University of Southern California, based in Los Angeles, completed the Wharton CEO Program at Philadelphia-based University of Pennsylvania and earned a bachelor's degree from California State University, Los Angeles.
