78 West Penn Physicians Want to Oust Interim Leadership, Resume Highmark Talks

Seventy-eight physicians from West Penn Allegheny Health System in Pittsburgh have signed a petition, in which they expressed their "lost confidence in the interim executive leadership" and urged the system to resume affiliations with health insurer Highmark, according to a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette report.

The physicians have asked West Penn's board to end its contract with Alvarez & Marsal, a New York City-based professional services firm providing the system's interim management team.

The firm was hired to help West Penn through its affiliation process with Highmark, according to the report. Physicians want interim leadership, including the CEO, replaced with a permanent executive team.

The physicians are also urging West Penn's board of directors to return to the negotiation table with Highmark "as soon as possible," according to the report. West Penn canceled the provider-payor merger last month, claiming Highmark breached the affiliation contract.

In a statement, West Penn Board Chairman Jack Isherwood said the system values the physicians' input, according to the report.
