7 latest hospital, health system layoffs

The following hospitals and health systems shared plans for or implemented layoffs in the past month. They are listed by the number of positions or employees affected.

1. Houston-based Harris Health System announced it will lay off 113 employees and leave an additional 149 open positions unfilled. The layoffs come as Harris Health expects a budget shortfall of about $72 million for the fiscal year that begins March 1.

2. Weeks after a deal fell through with Dallas-basedTenet Healthcare, Waterbury (Conn.) Hospital shared plans to eliminate 80 full-time equivalent positions from its workforce. The reductions affect full- and part-time workers for a total of approximately 100 people.

3. Ingalls Memorial Hospital in Harvey, Ill., cut about 80 positions and plans to close its employee child care center. Out of the 80 eliminated positions, about 15 were already vacant.

4. Forty-nine jobs will be affected with the end of Philadelphia-based Aramark's contract with Morehead Memorial Hospital, a nonprofit community hospital in Eden, N.C. Aramark employees who will have their jobs eliminated include laundry workers, food service workers, mechanics, custodial staff and managers.

5. As part of restructuring efforts amid reduced inpatient volumes and decreased revenue, DuBois, Pa.-based Penn Highlands Healthcare announced 30 employees will be laid off at its Clearfield campus and 50 others will see a reduction in hours.

6. El Paso (Texas) Children's Hospital laid off five full-time employees and will not fill some open positions. The decision comes as the hospital is trying to cut costs, improve financially and ensure long-term viability.

7. Three employees at St. Anthony Hospital in Pendleton, Ore. will be laid off as part of Englewood, Colo.–based Catholic Health Initiatives' plan to cut 1,500 positions by the end of January. CHI is the parent company of St. Anthony.
