6 tips for managing grief at the workplace

Grief is a powerful emotion that can take a significant toll on a person's personal and professional lives, so it is important that managers, especially in a field such as healthcare, know how to handle grief among their workers, according to Forbes.

Listed below are six tips for helping employees deal with their grief.

1. Make sure the grieving employee takes advantage of any mental health services offered as a part of their benefit plan, including counseling both before and after they return to work.

2. Make room for flexible schedules that allow people to work from home in order to remain productive even if they don't feel ready to return to their workplace.

3. Let people know you are available and willing to talk to them if they should ever need support.

4. Reassign work if necessary to make sure that your grieving employee does not feel overwhelmed when they return to work.

5. Invite the grieving employee to events or small social gatherings to help remind them that they are a part of a larger community full of people who care for them.

6. Encourage the bereaved employee to participate in volunteer opportunities that can help them feel needed again.
