3 ways to give employees what they want in the New Year

Employees are wishing for better communication in the workplace next year, more than bigger raises and boss-firings, according to a survey of more than 1,000 employees from employee engagement firm TINYpulse.

Here are three ways for management to effectively improve communication, presented by Forbes.

  1. Be direct. Better, more open communication was rated as the trait employees would most like to see in their bosses. Managers who share information openly instead of holding it hostage or using it as a weapon will build trust amongst employees in the workplace. It is especially important for hospital and health system leaders to communicate candidly with physicians, who like to know how the decisions made at an administrative level will affect their practice.

  2. Communicate, and communicate often. As a leader, it is vital to be a regular, reliable source of information for all employees. Consistent communication will not only keep employees informed, but also help them feel more confident in their own work.

  3. Build relationships. Personal relationships are built on good communication and professional relationships should be too, notes contributor Victor Lipman. In the survey, employees rated empathy, people skills and collaboration as top traits they'd like bosses to improve on in the New Year. Building personal relationships through improved communication will promote teamwork and collaboration between employees and management.
