3 ways Election Day 2015 will affect healthcare

Midterm elections have come and gone without much thunder on the national level, but the results could have a few ramifications in local healthcare markets.

Here is a breakdown of the election results that will influence healthcare.

1. Kentucky
Matt Bevin, a Republican businessman, took the governor's seat, boxing out his Democratic opposition, Kentucky Attorney General Jack Conway. Mr. Bevin's election could reverse quite a few changes made by outgoing Gov. Steve Beshear, an advocate of the Affordable Care Act who set up a state exchange and expanded Medicaid. According to NBC News, Mr. Bevin vowed to get rid of Kynect, Kentucky's state exchange and opposed Medicaid expansion.

However, as noted by NBC, Mr. Bevin has softened his opposition to Medicaid expansion, and now plans to continue to accept federal funding, but add premium fees for some Medicaid recipients.

2. Virginia

The commonwealth's senate remained red Tuesday despite efforts by Democratic Gov. Terry McAuliffe to flip the majority and prepare the state to support his ally, Hillary Rodham Clinton in the 2016 elections, according to CNN. Gov. McAuliffe was hoping to bolster his legislative agenda, particularly Medicaid expansion, according to the report.

3. Ohio
The Buckeye State rejected a measure called Issue 3, which would have legalized recreational and medical marijuana, according to CBS. If it had passed, the vote would have been a first for marijuana legislation, legalizing both medical and recreational usage simultaneously. Medical marijuana blazed the trail in the four states where recreational marijuana is already allowed.
