3 Trends Influencing Nurse Workload

Most nurses report that their duties are increasing while overtime hours are remaining stagnant, according to Vital Signs 2012, a national nursing attitudes and outlook report by Jackson Healthcare, a healthcare staffing company.

The findings of the report are based on a survey of nurses conducted online from October to November 2012. The 969 respondents were self-selected.

Three trends that will influence nurse workload, according to the survey, are:

•    Duties — 72 percent reported their duties as increasing, 25 percent reported it as remaining stagnant
•    Overtime hours — 50 percent reported it as remaining stagnant, 32 percent reported it as increasing
•    Patient load — 51 percent reported it as increasing, 41 percent reported it as remaining stagnant
