3 tips to help put down your phone and disengage from work on vacation

Americans often don't use the valuable vacation days they've earned, but even when they do, it is difficult for many to completely disengage from their work, according to the Harvard Business Review.

Listed below are three tips to help you put your phone down and actually enjoy your vacation.

1. Tell people you will be completely off the grid even if you plan on occasionally checking your email. If you let people know you will be checking your email a few times a day they will contact you as if you are still in the office. But, they will respect your distance if you let them think that you'll be disengaged entirely.

2. Keep your phone in a designated, concealed place instead of keeping it with you at all times. It will be difficult to resist checking your phone if you see notifications popping up throughout the day. In order to avoid this dilemma altogether, decide on a place to keep your phone so that it is out of sight and out of mind.

3. Ask your direct reports to send you full recaps the day before you return so you don't need to receive constant updates over the course of your vacation or feel overwhelmed by information the day you return. Getting to review the recaps the day before you return will allow you to enjoy your vacation while knowing that you will not be entering the office completely unaware.
