St. Joseph's Hospital in New York Shuts Down Cancer Clinic After Oncologist Leaves

St. Joseph's Hospital in Elmira, N.Y., has abruptly closed its cancer clinic following the sudden departure of Sydney Welt, MD, the oncologist who ran the clinic, according to a Star-Gazette report.

This closure has left roughly 300 cancer patients turning to Arnot Ogden Medical Center in Elmira, which merged with St. Joseph's Hospital last year, to find new care. Arnot Ogden is offering patients its Falck Cancer Center, which provides medical and radiation services, and is working with patients who wish to go elsewhere.

While the hospital did not comment on Dr. Welt's departure, Dr. Welt said he left because he refused to sign a document mandating he stop transporting hospital in-patients to the clinic for therapy, according to the report.
