Jackson Health Wants Approval of HCA Trauma Centers Revoked

Jackson Health System in Miami has filed petitions with the Florida Department of Health requesting the revocation of the department's approval of two Hospital Corporation of America trauma centers in Florida, according to a Miami Herald report.

Jackson Health's Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami had the only trauma center in the county, until HCA's Kendall Regional Medical Center opened in Miami in 2011. Kendall Regional was granted a provisional license for its trauma center soon after an administrative law judge found the departments trauma certification rule invalid in November 2011.

The ALJ's ruling was upheld by the 1st District Court of Appeals on Nov. 30, 2012. A week later the department approved the application of HCA's Ocala (Fla.) Regional Medical Center, according to the report.

Jackson Health submitted trauma center applications for two of its facilities —Jackson North Medical Center in North Miami Beach, Fla., and Jackson South Community Hospital in Miami —  but was denied approval in Dec. 13, 2012.

Jackson Health is seeking a hearing with an administrative law judge and has accused the department of giving HCA's facilities "selective benefit." Jackson's attorney's said that a hearing would show that all provisional licenses issued under the invalid trauma law should be revoked until the department has established a legally acceptable rule on trauma centers, according to the report.
