Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center's CON for Surgery Center Denied

Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, based in Winston-Salem, N.C., intends to appeal a denied certificate-of-need application for a new ambulatory surgery center in Clemmons, N.C., according to a report from The Business Journal.

The hospital had hoped to move three operating rooms from a facility in Winston-Salem to the new $8.6 million ASC.

The state had rejected the CON because it claimed the hospital was overstating the number of procedures that would be performed at the ASC, according to the report. The state also said the hospital had not shown the ASC would not duplicate existing or approved services

In a statement, a hospital representative said it anticipates the CON will eventually receive approval and the ASC remains on schedule to open in 2012.
