University of Virginia Health System hires first CMIO

The University of Virginia Health System in Charlottesville has appointed Michael A. Williams, MD, as its first CMIO.

Since March 2012, Dr. Williams has been a regional CMIO at Great Neck, N.Y.-based North Shore-LIJ Health System, overseeing medical informatics at four of the system's 16 hospitals. From 2008 to 2012, he was CMIO of the Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon.

At UVA, Dr. Williams will be responsible for managing the health system's Epic EHR as well as implementing new systems and technologies. "We have an amazing array of clinical applications at our disposal to better monitor, track and share clinical data among healthcare providers at UVA," he said. "The challenge I hope to assist with is how we can best apply these to patient care in a way that clearly improves patient care."
