University of Maryland Medical Center CEO to retire: 4 things to know

Jeffrey A. Rivest, president and CEO of Baltimore-based University of Maryland Medical Center, will retire at the end of August 2015 after 11 years at the helm.

Here are four things to know about Mr. Rivest and his departure.

1. Mr. Rivest has served as president and CEO of the UMMC, the flagship academic medical center of the University of Maryland Medical System, since 2004. He has a total of 40 years of healthcare leadership experience.

2. Mr. Rivest said he is retiring "to pursue many personal interests I have deferred for far too long."

3. John Ashworth, currently the UMMS senior vice president for network development, will serve as the interim UMMC president and CEO beginning Aug. 29. Mr. Ashworth has previously served as UMMC president and CEO, as well as director of the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center.

4. A search committee for a permanent president and CEO will be formed with representation of both the UMMS and UMMC boards, as well as partners from the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Mr. Rivest will remain an advisor during the interim period.
