The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia names Dr. Stephen Hunger chief of oncology

The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia has selected Stephen P. Hunger, MD, as chief of the division of oncology and director of the Center for Childhood Cancer Research.

Dr. Hunger assumed his role on Nov. 1. He arrived at CHOP from Children's Hospital Colorado in Aurora, where he most recently served as director of the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders and holder of the Ergen Family Chair in Pediatric Cancer. He was also a professor of Pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, also in Aurora, and chief of the section of pediatric hematology, oncology and bone marrow transplantation.

As a member of the Children's Oncology Group, the national cooperative organization of pediatric cancer centers, Dr. Hunger has served on numerous COG study committees since 2008. He has also served on NIH study sections and committees of the National Cancer Institute, the American Society of Hematology, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, as well as various charitable foundations and medical groups.

Dr. Hunger's research interest is in acute lymphoblastic leukemia, the most common childhood cancer. He earned his medical degree at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine in Farmington.
