NQF names Dr. Shantanu Agrawal CEO

The National Quality Forum's board of directors has named Shantanu Agrawal, MD, an emergency medicine physician, as the organization's new president and CEO.

Dr. Agrawal was previously the deputy administrator and director of CMS' Center for Program Integrity and worked to improve the physician experience with Medicare by minimizing administrative tasks for physicians.

He earned his medical degree from Weill Medical College of Cornell University in New York City and trained at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Dr. Agrawal also has a master's degree in social and political science from Cambridge University in the U.K.

"Shantanu understands the importance of advancing quality and patient safety both from the front lines of medicine and from a national policy perspective," said Bruce Siegel, MD, chair of the NQF board and president and CEO of America's Essential Hospitals. "He is the innovative, passionate, focused visionary that NQF needs now to ensure that we respond strategically and effectively to the nation's dynamically changing healthcare landscape."

Dr. Agrawal will start his new role Jan. 30.
