NIMHD Names Dr. Yvonne Maddox Director

The National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities has appointed Yvonne Maddox, PhD, as director.

Dr. Maddox's appointment follows the retirement of John Ruffin, PhD, who was the first director of NIMHD beginning in 2001.

Dr. Maddox previously served as deputy director of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development and acting deputy director of the National Institutes of Health. She co-chaired the NIH Strategic Plan to Reduce and Ultimately Eliminate Health Disparities and she chaired the federal SIDS/Sudden Unexpected Infant Death Working Group and the NIH Down Syndrome Consortium, an international public-private partnership.

Dr. Maddox is also a cardiovascular physiologist.
