MemorialCare Health System names John Bishop CEO of 3 hospitals: 8 things to know

MemorialCare Health System,  a six-hospital network based in Fountain Valley, Calif., has announced that John Bishop, CFO of Long Beach (Calif.) Memorial, Miller Children's & Women’s Hospital Long Beach (Calif.), Community Hospital Long Beach (Calif.) and Seaside Health Plan, has been appointed CEO of the three hospitals.

Here are eight things to know about Mr. Bishop.

1. Mr. Bishop, who succeeds former CEO Diana Hendel, will take on the new job immediately.

2. Mr. Bishop has been an executive with MemorialCare Health System since 2004.

3. As CEO, Mr. Bishop's immediate priorities include leading growth in key centers of clinical excellence; strengthening relationships and opportunities with physicians; enhancing the work environment to benefit all employees; maximizing the experience of patients and families; filling the CFO position; and overseeing the addition of convenient, community-based outpatient centers.

4. "We have a long history of providing outstanding care to our communities and my commitment and challenge is to improve the healthcare experience we provide to our patients and their families every day," Mr. Bishop said. "We will continue to transform healthcare in our communities through collaboration with our physicians, nurses, support staff and community, who support us in offering the highest quality and most compassionate care. My goal is to guide our organization on a path that maximizes the value we provide and results in a surrounding community that is as healthy as it can be."

5. Mr. Bishop has been an executive with MemorialCare Health System since 2004, when he became CFO of Saddleback Memorial Medical Center in Laguna Hills, Calif., and San Clemente, Calif., following 12 years as a certified public accountant with Ernst & Young.

6. In 2009, Mr. Bishop joined the Long Beach executive management team as CFO of Long Beach Memorial, Miller Children's, Community Hospital and Seaside Health Plan and oversaw financial operations of Memorial Medical Center Foundation, a philanthropic support organization for the three hospitals. 

7. Outside of MemorialCare, Mr. Bishop has served as treasurer of the California Children's Hospital Association and speaks frequently on healthcare topics. He was also on Becker's Hospital Review's 2015 list of CFOs to know.

8. He is a long-time resident of Long Beach, and earned a degree in accounting from University of Southern California.
