Howard University Hospital names Sandra Austin CEO

Sandra Austin, MPH, has been appointed as CEO for Howard University Hospital in Washington, D.C.

Ms. Austin has more than 35 years of healthcare management experience. Most recently, she served as managing director of Chicago-based Alvarez & Marsal Healthcare Industry Group, and before that, as chief management officer for the Louisiana State University Interim Public Hospital in New Orleans. She has also served in several other strategic leadership positions at large hospitals.

The new management team includes other former Alvarez & Marsal Healthcare leaders, including Kathleen Millgard, who will serve as HUH's COO and CNO, Douglas Womer, Jr., CFO, and Keith T. Ghezzi, MD, advisor.

Howard University entered into a management services agreement with Paladin Healthcare in October. The collaboration brought in new senior leaders and hospital managers who will assume responsibility for daily operations under the oversight of a joint Howard University and Paladin Healthcare Management Committee.

The relationship with Paladin is the latest in a series of steps Howard University has taken over the past 18 months to enhance HUH's operational efficiency and improve finances and access, in addition to advancing academic goals.
