20 latest CEO moves in hospitals, health systems

The following hospital and health system CEO moves were announced or implemented in the past two weeks, beginning with the most recent.

1. Penny Wheeler, MD, will become the first female CEO of Minneapolis-based Allina Health after the current CEO, Kenneth Paulus, retires at the end of the year.

2. Kathy Connerton was appointed president and CEO of Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton, N.Y., effective Dec. 15. Lourdes is part of St. Louis-based Ascension Health.

3. Lincoln, Neb.-based Regional Provider Network announced Michael Hein, MD, will serve as the network's CEO beginning Dec. 1.

4. Brian Nester, MD, was named president and CEO of Allentown, Pa.-based Lehigh Valley Health Network after serving as the system's interim president and CEO since the retirement of Ronald Swinfard in July.

5. Brentwood, Tenn.-based LifePoint Hospitals appointed Rick Palagi, MHA, as CEO of Northeastern Nevada Regional Hospital located in Elko, Nev., where he has served as interim CEO since August 7.

6. Kevin Slavin, president and CEO of East Orange (N.J.) General Hospital, accepted an offer to become president and CEO of St. Joseph's Healthcare System in Paterson, N.J.

7. Hamilton Memorial Hospital in McLeansboro, Ill., terminated CEO Randy Dauby's contract, but hospital officials have not disclosed a reason for the termination.

8. Taos (N.M.) Health Systems CFO Steven Rozenboom will assume head leadership for the system until a permanent CEO is recruited.

9. The Massena (N.Y.) Memorial Hospital Board of Managers named Robert G. Wolleben as CEO of the hospital, effective Dec. 15.

10. Gary P. Miller, president and CEO of CHI St. Alexius Health, based in Bismarck, N.D., announced he will retire April 15, 2015.

11. Gary Baker, president and CEO of Memorial Hospital in Towanda, Pa., announced he will step down from his role when the hospital's planned merger into the Sayre, Pa.-based Guthrie Health System takes place in the coming months.

12. Phelps Memorial Hospital Center, located in Sleepy Hollow, N.Y., announced the retirement of Keith F. Safian, the hospital's CEO effective Nov. 30.

13. Houston Methodist named Dan Newman CEO of its St. John Hospital in Clear Lake, Texas after serving as the hospital's interim CEO for the past six months.

14. Burlington, Mass.-based Lahey Health Board of Trustees announced Denis Conroy, CEO of Beverly Hospital, located in Beverly, Mass., and Addison Gilbert Hospital, located in Gloucester, will retire on Jan. 15, 2015.

15. Lahey Health's board also announced the retirement of Kevin Smith, CEO of Winchester (Mass.) Hospital, which will take effect Jan. 15, 2015.

16. Montgomery County Memorial Hospital in Red Oak, Iowa, appointed David Abercrombie as CEO, effective Dec. 8.

17. Placentia (Calif.)-Linda Hospital, part of Dallas-based Tenet Healthcare, named Audrey Gregory, RN, BSN, MSN, MHA, PhD, as CEO.

18. Lillington, N.C.-based Harnett Health System announced the resignation of its CEO, Ken Bryan.

19. Snellville, Ga.-based Eastside Medical Center named Scott Schmidly, MHA, CEO.

20. Gary Gottlieb, MD, is stepping down as president and CEO of Boston-based Partners HealthCare next year to lead Partners in Health, a nonprofit organization that provides medical care in impoverished counties. He will transition to his new role in July 2015.
