14 recent hospital, health system executive moves

The following hospital and health system executive moves occurred within the past week, beginning with the most recent.

1. Louisville, Ky.-based Kindred Healthcare announced Benjamin A. Breier will become CEO and a member of Kindred's Board of Directors, on March 31, 2015.

2. Gary Baker, president and CEO of Memorial Hospital in Towanda, Pa., announced he will step down from his role when the hospital's planned merger into the Sayre, Pa.-based Guthrie Health system takes place in the coming months.

3. Gary P. Miller, president and CEO of CHI St. Alexius Health, based in Bismarck, N.D., announced he will retire April 15, 2015.

4. Brentwood, Tenn.-based Duke LifePoint, which owns Bell Hospital, located in Ishpeming, Mich., Marquette (Mich.) General Hospital and Portage Health, located in Hancock, Mich., announced the three hospitals will join together under a new name, U.P. Health System. Mitch Leckelt, who has been serving as Bell Hospital's interim CEO since July, has been appointed CEO for Bell Hospital. Steve Embree will serve as regional CFO for the three hospitals. Mr. Embree, also a CPA, will oversee the finance departments at each hospital.

5. Phelps Memorial Hospital Center, located in Sleepy Hollow, N.Y., announced the retirement of Keith F. Safian, the hospital's CEO, effective Nov. 30.

6. Houston Methodist named Dan Newman CEO of its St. John Hospital in Clear Lake, Texas, after serving as the hospital's interim CEO for the past six months.

7. Burlington, Mass.-based Lahey Health's Board of Trustees announced Denis Conroy, CEO of Beverly (Mass.) Hospital and Addison Gilbert Hospital, located in Gloucester, Mass., will retire Jan. 15, 2015. The Board also announced the retirement of Kevin Smith, CEO of Winchester (Mass.) Hospital, which will also come into effect Jan. 15.

8. Montgomery County Memorial Hospital in Red Oak, Iowa, appointed David Abercrombie as CEO, effective Dec. 8.

9. Placentia, Calif.-based Placentia-Linda Hospital, part of Dallas-based Tenet Healthcare, named Audrey Gregory, RN, BSN, MSN, MHA, PhD, as CEO.

10. Jane Phillips Medical Center, located in Bartlesville, Okla., named Mike A. Moore as president and COO.

11. Lillington, N.C.-based Harnett Health System announced the resignation of its CEO, Ken Bryan.

12. Doctors Hospital at White Rock Lake, located in Dallas, appointed Jorge Trevino as COO.

13. Snellville, Ga.-based Eastside Medical Center named Scott Schmidly, MHA, CEO.

14. Gary Gottlieb, MD, is stepping down as president and CEO of Boston-based Partners HealthCare next year to lead Partners in Health, a nonprofit organization that provides medical care in impoverished counties.
