President Steve Lawler: Helping Vidant Medical Center Excel

Steve Lawler has served as president of Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, N.C., since 2007.

Prior to taking the helm at Vidant Medical Center, Mr. Lawler served as chief administrative officer of the system, then known as the University Health Systems of Eastern Carolina. He has more than 30 years of healthcare experience and has worked in the private, public and academic sectors. He has also served the nation as a medical service corps member in the U.S. Army.

Under Mr. Lawler's leadership, Vidant Medical Center has made great strides. For example, in 2013, the hospital received Magnet recognition for excellence in healthcare from the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

Additionally, Vidant Medical Center was ranked as one of the top 20 hospitals in North Carolina by U.S. News & World Report for 2013-14. "We are committed to providing best-in-class care and best-in-class experience to the people and communities we are so privileged to care for and serve. This 'best hospital' status is, without question, the result of the excellent work of our healthcare team — our superb medical staff and employees," Mr. Lawler said in a news release of the U.S. News & World Report ranking.

In addition to leading Vidant Medical Center, Mr. Lawler has led leadership positions in healthcare organizations at the state and national level. He is the past chairman of the North Carolina Hospital Association Board and the past chairman of the VHA Central Atlantic Board. He has also served as a Regional Policy Board member for the American Hospital Association.
