CFO Steven Smith: Financial Cornerstone of Kansas Heart Hospital

Steven Smith, a certified public accountant, has served as CFO of Kansas Heart Hospital in Wichita since its founding, helping it to become one of the leading physician-owned hospitals in the country.

SteveSmithGroundbreaking for Kansas Heart Hospital began in October 1997, and the hospital admitted its first patient in February 1999. Mr. Smith has been with Kansas Heart Hospital since 1998, giving him 14 years of total hospital financial experience. As CFO, he is in charge of Kansas Heart Hospital's business office, billing, collections, information technology and other financial responsibilities.

In May 2007, he and other executives led the effort to help Via Christi Health System, also based in Wichita, purchase a 49 percent interest in Kansas Heart Hospital. The 54-bed hospital continues to post solid financials, as well, recording net income of $6.07 million last year, according to data at the American Hospital Directory.

Before joining Kansas Heart Hospital, Mr. Smith worked at a variety of other organizations. He started his professional career as an accounting manager at Physicians Corporation of America, a former health maintenance organization. He also worked at accounting firm KPMG and former rent-to-own outlet Thorn Americas.
