CFO Peter McCanna: "Uber" CFO of Northwestern Memorial HealthCare

Staff -
For Peter McCanna, CFO of Chicago's Northwestern Memorial HealthCare, all hospital and health system CFOs should ask themselves the following four questions to become "uber" healthcare financial executives:

•    In what ways would your CEO view you as a partner?
•    Are you viewed as a value creation leader, and how are you involved in identifying opportunities?
•    How will you know you have become an "uber" CFO?
•    Do you own and know the value of your business?

Mr. McCanna outlined those four questions in a 2007 Kaufman Hall report, and he provided them in the context that the image of a CFO has changed over the years. He wrote that answering those four questions with conviction, while aligning financial principles for an uncompromising vision of financial excellence, are necessary to seamless financial operations.

Mr. McCanna first joined Northwestern Memorial in August 2002. He has served in various other healthcare settings, including CFO of Presbyterian Healthcare Services in Albuquerque, N.M., and CFO of the University of Colorado Hospital in Aurora.
