Every hospital CFO position has its own unique challenges, but for Maria Joyce, her challenges are truly one-of-kind.

Maria Joyce is CFO of the NIH Clinical Center.Ms. Joyce is CFO of the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center — "America's research hospital" located on the NIH campus in Bethesda, Md. The hospital is best known for its clinical research, health lab discoveries and treatment innovations, and Ms. Joyce ensures the hospital's financial management, planning and execution of those vital programs stays vibrant.

Before she became CFO of the NIH Clinical Center, Ms. Joyce was the director of the HHS Division of Financial Operations within HHS' Office of the Secretary. While there, she oversaw all accounting operations, financial reporting, financial system functions and debt management. She also was CFO and CIO of NIH's Office of Research Services and Office of Research Facilities.

Ms. Joyce has received several awards for her financial prowess within governmental healthcare organizations. In 2010, she won the NIH Clinical Center Director's Award, which highlighted her "excellent oversight" of the research hospital's budget in fiscally challenging times. She also won an NIH award in 2004 for her design and implementation of a best practices approach for lease planning and analysis.
