CFO Kevin Vermeer: Leading the Finances of Iowa Health System's Accountable Care

Iowa Health System, based in Des Moines, is in a unique position among other health systems. It is participating in both CMS' Medicare accountable care organization initiative and a commercial ACO.

KevinVermeerFor Kevin Vermeer, CFO of Iowa Health System, a position he has held since 2009, this is an origin point for the future of healthcare delivery in the United States.

In June, he told Becker's Hospital Review that both types of ACOs will "create unique challenges in driving clinical improvements," including care coordination models and obtaining enough resources for physicians. However, he believes both the Medicare and private payor ACOs will benefit providers and, more importantly, patients.

"Participation in both types of ACOs will create energy around breaking down historical care delivery silos, resulting in better care for all of our patients," Mr. Vermeer said.

Previously, Mr. Vermeer held other positions within Iowa Health System. He was CFO of Trinity Regional Health System in Rock Island, Ill., and he served as interim CEO of Trinity Muscatine (Iowa). He has also worked for Allen Hospital, a 228-bed hospital in Waterloo, Iowa, and other hospitals in Colorado.

Mr. Vermeer will be a speaker at the Becker's Hospital Review 4th Annual Meeting, May 9-11, in Chicago. For more information on the event, or to register, please click here.
