CEO Thomas DeFauw: Still Coaching at Port Huron Hospital

Staff -
Thomas DeFauw was named president and CEO of Port Huron (Mich.) Hospital in September 2007.

Prior to joining Port Huron, Mr. DeFauw was the president and CEO of Gratiot Medical Center in Alma, Mich. While he was there, he oversaw a building expansion project and the development of patient services such as cardiac catheterization and medical oncology. He has also served as an administrator of an elder service network in Illinois and as CEO of Rockford Health System.

Mr. DeFauw was a math and economics teacher and a coach and then went into the insurance industry before he entered the field of healthcare. Even though he has come very far since his days a coach, he still uses those skills as a healthcare CEO. "I absolutely believe in the teamwork philosophy," Mr. DeFauw said. "My role is that of a coach. I want to utilize skills, recognize expertise and take it all to the greatest potential."

Since he took the helm at Port Huron, the hospital has won numerous awards, including being designated as a breast imaging center of excellence by the American College of Radiologists in 2009 and 2010, becoming a Blue Distinction Center for Cardiac Care and being named in the top five percent of hospitals national for patient safety in 2008 and 2009.
