CEO Ralph Muller: Delivering the Promise of Advanced Care at University of Pennsylvania Health System

Ralph Muller has served as CEO of the University of Pennsylvania Health System in Philadelphia since July 2003. As CEO, Mr. Muller is responsible for managing the operational effectiveness and financial health of the $1.7 billion health system. He works closely with Penn Medicine, the umbrella organization for the University of Pennsylvania Health System, to help implement its overarching strategic plan. Mr. Muller oversees three hospitals, a primary care provider network and home care, hospice care and long-term care.

His extensive familiarity with the complex challenges facing urban-based academic health centers guides his successful leadership of the University of Pennsylvania Health System. Mr. Muller attributes the success of the health system to its focus and employees. Mr. Muller is a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academics and a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Mr. Muller began his career in academic medicine in 1985 when he was named vice president of the University of Chicago's Hospitals and deputy dean of biological sciences. In 1986, he was named president and CEO of the University of Chicago Hospitals & Health System. He served in that role for 15 years.
