CEO John Federspiel: First Name Basis at Hudson Valley Hospital Center

John Federspiel is heading toward his 25th year as president and CEO of Hudson Valley Hospital Center in Cortlandt Manor, N.Y. Since his appointment, Hudson Valley Hospital has grown from a small community hospital to a state-of-the-art facility with improved finances and employee satisfaction.

CEO John Federspiel is on a first name basis with employees at Hudson Valley Hospital CenterShortly after he began, Mr. Federspiel guided the hospital through a financial turnaround in 1991, winning the American Hospital Association's turnaround contest for a three-year period of operation. The hospital's annual operating budget has increased five fold to nearly $145 million in 2010. He was also responsible for doubling the square footage of the hospital with a new addition including an ambulatory surgery unit, new laboratories and a cardio-pulmonary rehabilitation space. The hospital has also just completed a four-story, 84-bed patient tower and an expansion to the emergency department.

Under Mr. Federspiel's tenure, Hudson Valley has received a series of awards and recognitions. The hospital was named as the best place to give birth in Westchester, N.Y. It received national recognition from Press Ganey for success in employee satisfaction and received a Forbes Enterprise Award for its leadership and innovation. Hudson Valley Hospital has also earned a Magnet Award for nursing excellence.

When speaking on improving employee satisfaction Mr. Federspiel told the Fairfield County Business Journal, "We have a very unique employee culture that is also reflected in our medical staff. The collegiality and the cooperation make it a nice place to work. I've always been on a first-name basis with everyone in the hospital. We treat people like we want to be treated and I think that's been the key to our success."  

Mr. Federspiel has received awards and various honors from the Arthritis Foundation, the Visiting Nurse Association of Westchester and a variety of area chambers and civic associations. He is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives. Mr. Federspiel has served on numerous state and county committees including two terms as chairman of Northern Metropolitan Hospital Association.
