CEO John Collins: Patient Focused at Winthrop-University Hospital in New York

Staff -
John Collins has been president and CEO of Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola, N.Y., since 2009. He has led the 600-bed hospital and nationally recognized healthcare professionals in embodying a culture of caring and a sense of community.

"The hospital's mission is shaped by the commitment of every member of our staff to a simple yet profound truth — 'your health means everything.' Our commitment to the integrity, comfort and well-being of the individual, and a conviction that medical education and research are essential to the provision of the highest quality patient care is what makes Winthrop a 'welcoming and world-class' institution," said Mr. Collins.

In addition to directing Winthrop's focus on the best care for its patients, Mr. Collins has built the hospital's physician relationships. According to a report by the Long Island Press, he played an integral role in Winthrop's acquisition of 24 practices with more than 115 physicians spread across 40 locations in New York.

"Another goal is to reap the benefits of a five-year plan that involved physician practice acquisition and electronic medical record implementation in physician offices. The combination of these two initiatives will enable Winthrop to begin the process of care coordination in a broader medical home model. This platform will provide invaluable experience should risk contracting become the norm," says Mr. Collins.

Under his tenure, Winthrop-University has been ranked in U.S. News & World Report's Best Hospitals Metro Area Rankings for 10 high-performing specialties, including pediatric diabetes and endocrinology.
