CEO John Bluford: Healthcare Innovator at Truman Medical Centers

John Bluford, MBA, FACHE, has served as president and CEO of Truman Medical Centers in Kansas City, Mo., since March 1999. Truman Medical Centers is a two-hospital, non-profit system and is the largest safety-net hospital system in Missouri.

Mr. Bluford is especially proud of helping TMC become more customer service- and patient safety-oriented and more innovative. As a result of his efforts, TMC was named one of the top five academic medical centers in the country by University Health System Consortium in 2005.

On top of making TMC one of the top choices for patients and employees, Mr. Bluford has also helped the system make financial strides. He helped increase TMC's revenue by 122 percent over 10 years. Mr. Bluford also helped to quadruple TMC's commercial insurance revenue during his time as CEO.

Last year, the American Hospital Association board of trustees elected Mr. Bluford as chairman of the board. He is also past chair of the National Association of Public Hospitals, a past chairman of the Missouri Hospital Association and past chair of the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce.

Mr. Bluford was on the 2012 "300 Hospital and Health System Leaders to Know" list by Becker's Hospital Review.
