CEO Dr. Steven Gabbe: Expert Leadership of Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center

Steven Gabbe, MD, has served as CEO of Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus and senior vice president of health sciences at Ohio State University since April 2008.

"Now, the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center is in the middle of a $1.1 billion expansion. In our new James Cancer Hospital and Critical Care Center, opening in July 2014, designated research and education spaces are placed side-by-side with patient rooms on the same floor. This juxtaposition will encourage our professors in clinical and translational research. Through our expansion, we are creating the future of medicine as we fulfill our mission to improve people's lives," says Dr. Gabbe.

Prior to his appointment as CEO, Dr. Gabbe served Ohio State for nine years as a professor and chairman of obstetrics and gynecology at the OSU College of Medicine. Previously, he served on the obstetrics and gynecology faculties of the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, University of Colorado School of Medicine in Denver and University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia. Dr. Gabbe was named chair of Ob/Gyn at Seattle-based University of Washington Medical Center in 1996 and dean of Nashville, Tenn.-based Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in 2001. At Vanderbilt, he increased National Institutes of Health grant funding by 77 percent and increased the number of faculty by 66 percent, bringing the total to more than 1,800.

Dr. Gabbe is one of the world's leading experts on the complications of diabetes and pregnancy. He is the author of more than 160 peer-reviewed papers and is senior editor of the leading textbook in his field, "Obstetrics: Normal and Problem Pregnancies." Dr. Gabbe has held leadership positions with the Association of American Medical Colleges and National Institutes of Health; he is co-chair of the Liaison Committee for Medical Education and is a member of the Institute of Medicine.
