CEO Dr. Kevin Joseph: Alleviating Emergencies at West Chester Hospital in Ohio
Before his appointment as CEO of West Chester, Dr. Joseph served as the medical director of West Chester's emergency department. During his tenure, he fostered a culture of patient satisfaction and quality, reaching a patient satisfaction score in the 98th percentile.
As CEO, Dr. Joseph has continued to improve the emergency department. He helped implement a unique patient flow process that minimizes the time spent in the waiting room. On average, patients see a physician within 15 minutes of arrival in an emergency department treatment room. Dr. Joseph's commitment to emergency care at West Chester has garnered the department recognition as an emergency center of excellence by the Emergency Excellence Group, an external benchmarking organization. It is the only hospital in Ohio to receive the designation this year.
"My role as a practicing emergency medicine physician allows me the unique opportunity to continually monitor, from a first-hand perspective, the experience that our employees, physicians, visitors and patients have with the organization. I am able to continuously evaluate all aspects of quality, safety, process efficiency and customer satisfaction, among other areas, in real-time," says Dr. Joseph. "Thus, areas of improvement are quickly noticed and promptly addressed. Serving as both a CEO and a practicing physician within the organization that I lead provides a unique perspective, which benefits many and I am grateful for the lessons I learn through the dual role."
Dr. Joseph is also an assistant professor at the University of Cincinnati department of emergency medicine residency program and the medical director of UC Health emergency medicine. He is a member of the American College of Physician Executives, the American College of Healthcare Executives and the American College of Emergency Physicians.
